Sustainable Affordable Housing Development

Deepshikha Sarkar1*

Abstract

The increasing demand for affordable housing has driven the adoption of sustainable construction materials such as Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA), Bamboo Flooring, and Cellulose Insulation, as well as technologies like photovoltaic solar panels and green roofs, all of which aim to reduce environmental impact and enhance energy efficiency. However, significant barriers such as high initial costs, supply chain limitations, and lack of skilled labor hinder their widespread implementation. This paper aims to examine the principles of sustainability in affordable housing, analyze associated challenges, evaluate existing materials and technologies, and propose innovative strategies for enhancing affordability and sustainability. A review of existing studies from 2021 to 2025 highlights the need for overcoming challenges in material consistency, cost-efficiency, and maintenance. The research gap reveals limited exploration of strategies such as modular designs, local material sourcing, and financial incentives. Potential solutions include local sourcing, policy reforms, targeted training, and public-private partnerships. The originality of this review lies in its comprehensive approach to addressing both technological and socio-economic barriers, offering actionable insights for sustainable affordable housing in urban and rural contexts.
