Abstract
Obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease characterized by excessive or abnormal accumulation of body fat that can impair health. It is influenced by genetic, metabolic, behavioral, environmental and social factors. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are an important class of medicines used in the management of obesity because they influence appetite, satiety, gastric emptying and glucose metabolism. Examples used in weight management include liraglutide and semaglutide; tirzepatide is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist and is also used for chronic weight management. GLP-1-based therapies are generally used as part of a comprehensive approach that includes healthy eating, physical activity and behavioral support. This article reviews the mechanism, pharmacological actions, clinical role, benefits, adverse effects, limitations, pharmacist responsibilities and future perspectives of GLP-1-based therapies in obesity.
