Abstract

Aquatic insects constitute an important component of freshwater ecosystems and contribute substantially to nutrient cycling, decomposition, food-web dynamics and ecological assessment. The Godavari River and its associated streams, pools, marginal wetlands and riparian habitats provide diverse environments suitable for a variety of aquatic and semi-aquatic insects. The present study proposes an assessment of the diversity and distribution of aquatic insects living in and around the Godavari River in Nirmal District, Telangana. The study focuses on major insect groups belonging to orders such as Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Diptera and Trichoptera. Sampling may be undertaken during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon periods using aquatic nets, hand collection, vegetation sweeping and substrate sampling. Important environmental parameters such as water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, turbidity and habitat characteristics should be recorded simultaneously. Aquatic insects are ecologically significant because their occurrence and abundance can reflect variations in water quality and habitat condition. Previous research on upstream stretches of the Godavari has demonstrated that insects constitute the major component of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities, while studies in Telangana have documented diverse aquatic beetles and other aquatic invertebrates. The present investigation can provide baseline information on aquatic insect diversity in the Nirmal region and contribute to freshwater biodiversity documentation and conservation planning.
