Innovating Mathematics Teaching Methods Toward Competency Development at Van Xuan High School, Hanoi

Abstract
Competency-oriented innovation of teaching methods is one of the core requirements of Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Curriculum, particularly for Mathematics at the upper-secondary level. This study aims to assess the current state of innovation in Mathematics teaching methods toward competency development at Van Xuan High School, Hanoi, and to analyze the extent to which innovative teaching methods influence the formation and development of students’ mathematical competencies. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining questionnaire surveys, classroom observations, teacher interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that teachers have gradually adopted active teaching methods, including problem-based learning, cooperative learning, project-based learning, information technology applications, and formative assessment, with the aim of promoting students’ active and autonomous learning. The innovation of teaching methods contributes to improving students’ mathematical reasoning and thinking, problem-solving, mathematical communication, and use of learning tools and resources, while also increasing their interest in learning. However, the implementation process still faces several challenges, including uneven teacher capacity in designing learning activities, large class sizes, limited facilities and infrastructure, and assessment practices that are not yet fully aligned with competency-development objectives. Based on the findings, the study proposes several solutions to improve the effectiveness of competency-oriented Mathematics teaching innovation in upper-secondary schools, thereby contributing to the effective implementation of Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Curriculum.
