Role of FinTech in Bridging the Urban–Rural Financial Divide in India

Dr. Ankur Sharma1*

Abstract

India’s financial system has historically evolved along urban-centric lines, leaving rural populations with limited access to formal financial services, credit instruments, and risk-management tools. Despite sustained policy interventions aimed at financial inclusion, structural constraints such as geographic isolation, information asymmetry, and low financial literacy have continued to widen the urban–rural financial divide. In this context, financial technology (FinTech) has emerged as a critical institutional innovation capable of reconfiguring access, affordability, and usability of financial services. This study examines the role of FinTech in bridging the urban–rural financial divide in India by empirically analyzing adoption patterns, usage intensity, and perceived financial outcomes among urban and rural users.

Using primary data collected from a structured survey of 200 respondents equally distributed between urban and rural areas, the study employs statistical tools including descriptive analysis, independent sample t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression models. The findings reveal that while urban users demonstrate higher overall FinTech adoption, rural users experience proportionally greater marginal benefits in terms of transaction convenience, access to formal credit, and financial confidence. FinTech adoption is found to have a statistically significant positive impact on financial inclusion and a measurable role in narrowing the urban–rural gap.

The study contributes to the literature by moving beyond access-based narratives of inclusion and highlighting FinTech’s role as an institutional intermediary that reshapes financial participation in underserved contexts. The results offer important implications for policymakers, regulators, and FinTech firms seeking to design inclusive digital finance ecosystems that balance innovation with equity and sustainability.
