Abstract
This phenomenological study investigates the lived experiences of adolescent parents in Surigao del Norte, Philippines, as they navigate the complexities of early parenthood. Utilizing a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach grounded in existentialist and interpretive philosophies, the research examines how young parents from the municipalities of Sison and Malimono experience and interpret their transition to parenthood. Through in-depth interviews, the study explores the emotional, social, and financial dimensions of adolescent parenthood, revealing six critical themes: psychological impacts, financial instability, dependence on family support, aspirations for self-improvement, coping mechanisms, and insights on maturity and responsibility.
Adolescent parents face significant psychological challenges, often expressing fear, anxiety, and a sense of being overwhelmed by their new roles. Financial hardship is pervasive, highlighting the need for economic support as many young parents struggle to meet basic needs. Family and social networks emerge as vital sources of strength and resilience, providing emotional and practical assistance. Despite these challenges, the participants express strong aspirations for a better future, often viewing education as a pathway to economic stability and a means to improve their children’s lives. Coping strategies, including reliance on spirituality and self-motivation, help young parents adapt to their responsibilities. Reflections on the importance of maturity and readiness for parenthood highlight a critical awareness of the challenges and sacrifices involved in their roles.
The study’s insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted challenges faced by adolescent parents, providing valuable implications for healthcare professionals, social support organizations, and policymakers. The findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions, including financial assistance, educational opportunities, and family-centered support programs, to empower adolescent parents and promote their well-being. This research advocates for adolescent-centered healthcare services, enhancing the support structures available to young parents and helping them build resilience as they transition into parenthood.
