Abstract
“Unraveling the contributions of Indian Knowledge Systems to scientific disciplines” refers to the process of exploring and understanding how traditional knowledge and practices originating from India have influences and contributed various scientific fields. “Indian Knowledge Systems” encompasses a wide array of traditional knowledge, including but not limited to ayurveda, yoga, mathematics, astronomy, metallurgy and philosophy. These systems have a long history and are very often intertwined with spiritual, cultural and philosophical aspects of Indian society. In terms of Indian sciences, the Vedas provide insights into various aspects of the natural world and human existence. For instance, the Vedas contain descriptions of celestial bodies, the movements of the sun, moon and atars and concepts related to time and space. Vedic texts include numerical calculations, geometric principles and mathematical concepts such as numbers, arithmetic operations and fractions. Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine in India finds its roots in the Vedas. The Atharva Veda, in particular, contains hymns and verses related to health, diseases and medicinal plants. The Upanishads delve into profound philosophical and psychological concepts, exploring the nature of existence, consciousness and the self. It is important to approach these texts with a nuanced understanding. While they offer valuable insights, they are also products of their time and cultural context. Some interpretations of Vedic texts may emphasize their scientific aspects, while others may focus more on their spiritual or metaphorical meanings. Additionally, while the Vedic scriptures provide a foundation for Indian sciences, India’s scientific achievements have evolved over millennia, influenced by various cultures, religions and intellectual traditions. Contemporary Indian science encompass a wide range of disciplines and shaped by global collaboration and modern scientific methodologies.
The study aims to explore the contributions of ancient Indian scholars in the sacred Vedas and Upanishads which are the foundation and origin for all the practices of sciences, their innovation and advancement.
