Abstract
This study determined and compared the effects of Story-Problem Instruction (SPI) and Project-Based Learning (PBL) on the Mathematics achievement of Grade 9 students at Afga National High School. Specifically, it examined students’ pretest and posttest performance, differences in achievement before and after the intervention, and students’ learning experiences during the implementation of the two instructional strategies. The study employed a quasi-experimental two-group pretest-posttest comparative design involving eighty (80) Grade 9 students divided into two groups, with 40 students exposed to Story-Problem Instruction and 40 students exposed to Project-Based Learning. Data were gathered using a validated Mathematics Achievement Test and survey questionnaire and analyzed through Mean Percentage Score, Mean, Paired Sample t-test, and Independent Sample t-test. Findings revealed that both groups initially demonstrated low mastery in Mathematics, with pretest mean percentage scores of 23.85 for the SPI group and 24.10 for the PjBL group. Following the intervention, both groups improved to moderate mastery, with posttest mean percentage scores increasing to 73.15 for SPI and 63.80 for PjBL. Significant differences were found between pretest and posttest scores for SPI (t = -24.32, p < .001) and PjBL (t = -17.73, p < .001), indicating improved Mathematics achievement in both groups. However, SPI obtained a significantly higher mean gain score (24.65) than PjBL (19.85), suggesting greater effectiveness in improving Mathematics performance. Students also reported highly positive learning experiences, particularly in engagement, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving.
