A MERN Stack Based Social Media Web Application with Real-Time Communication and Interactive Networking Features

Abstract
Social networking platforms have become one of the most influential technologies in the modern digital era. Millions of users worldwide use social media systems for communication, information sharing, networking, entertainment, and community interaction. The rapid growth of internet technologies and cloud-based systems has significantly increased the demand for responsive, scalable, and secure social networking applications. Modern users expect social media systems to provide smooth user experience, secure authentication, responsive interfaces, media sharing capabilities, and real-time interaction features across different devices and screen sizes. This research paper presents the design and implementation of PingUp, a modern social media web application developed using the MERN stack architecture consisting of MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, and Node.js. The application is designed to provide an interactive platform where users can create accounts, manage profiles, share posts, upload stories, communicate through messaging, and discover new users. The system integrates modern frontend technologies with scalable backend services to create a responsive and user-friendly environment. The frontend of the application is developed using React.js along with Tailwind CSS and Vite to ensure reusable components, responsive layouts, fast rendering, and improved performance. The backend architecture is implemented using Node.js and Express.js, which manage RESTful APIs, request handling, middleware processing, and communication with the database. MongoDB is used as the primary NoSQL database for storing user-generated data such as posts, stories, messages, and profile information efficiently. Clerk authentication services are integrated to provide secure login, registration, email verification, and session management. The proposed system follows a modular client-server architecture that improves scalability, maintainability, and development flexibility. The project demonstrates practical implementation of frontend-backend integration, authentication systems, database management, REST API communication, and responsive web design techniques used in modern full-stack development. The developed application successfully achieved the objective of creating a secure and scalable social networking platform with modern user interface design and real-time interaction capabilities. The project also highlights the effectiveness of the MERN stack in developing modern web applications capable of handling dynamic user interactions and scalable backend processing efficiently.
