Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of everyday life, especially among college students.

Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube enable students to communicate,

share information, and express their ideas instantly. While these platforms offer numerous benefits including connectivity, entertainment, and educational opportunities, excessive usage has raised concerns regarding its psychological consequences. Social media addiction is increasingly recognized as a behavioral concern where individuals feel compelled to spend

long hours online, often at the cost of their academic responsibilities, sleep patterns, and mental well-being.

This research paper examines the psychological impact of social media addiction among college students. The study focuses on the relationship between excessive social media usage and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, low self-esteem, and decreased academic productivity. By reviewing existing literature and analyzing behavioral patterns among young adults, the paper highlights the potential risks associated with uncontrolled digital engagement.

The findings suggest that while social media is a powerful communication tool, its excessive use can lead to emotional distress and behavioral changes.

The study emphasizes the importance of balanced digital usage, awareness programs, and educational interventions that encourage responsible technology use among students.
