Draupadi’s Leadership in the Mahabharata – An Analysis

Abstract

One of the greatest epics of ancient India ‘Mahabharata’ has characters whose lives help us advance studies in philosophy, ethics and leadership. Among them Draupadi shines as an exceptional example of strength of character, moral courage, political acumen and transformational leadership. Draupadi is often remembered for the suffering and humiliation she faced in the Kaurava court; yet, she is much more than a victim. As a catalyst for justice, strategist to the Pandavas, and a fighter for dignity and justice, she freed women from oppression. The paper focuses on the leadership quality of Draupadi, as exhibited in the Mahabharata text. More specifically, it will analyse her decision-making ability, emotional intelligence, ability to deal with crises and steadfast commitment to dharma. The paper then investigates the current relevance of this model for gender studies, organizational leadership, ethics, and conflict resolution. Draupadi’s character shows that leadership is not dependent upon official authority, but can emerge through courage, conviction and moral strength in the face of adversity.
