Abstract

This study examined household waste segregation practices in Tungao, Butuan City, utilizing a descriptive-correlational research design with 167 households from five puroks selected through cluster and convenience sampling. The investigation assessed demographic profiles and their influence on knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and practices related to waste segregation. Results revealed a demographically stable community: 31% aged 45–59 years, 56% female, 59% with 4–6 family members, 29% high school graduates, and 77% residing for over 10 years. Knowledge levels varied, with 50% rated “High” and the remainder “Intermediate,” indicating areas for improvement in recyclable identification and plastic handling. Attitudes demonstrated very high environmental responsibility (mean=4.24), with behavior (mean=4.29) and practices (mean=4.29) showing equally strong engagement in segregation routines. Statistical analysis using ANOVA revealed that age, educational attainment, and length of residency significantly influenced attitude, behavior, and practice variables (p<0.05), whereas sex and family size did not differ significantly. Despite high awareness, actual implementation varies, necessitating targeted demographic-specific interventions. This study recommends enhanced environmental education, particularly for children and new residents, alongside strengthened policy enforcement, infrastructural support, and sustained community programs. The findings provide policymakers and community organizations with evidence-based insights to improve compliance with household waste segregation and promote sustainable environmental stewardship in Tungao.
