Abstract
Goods and Services Tax (GST) was adopted in India to streamline and make the tax system more transparent. Although it has made the taxes few, small businesses are still struggling to learn and adapt to the GST requirements. The experience I have during an internship at a Chartered Accountant office is what forms the basis of this paper. I helped the business clients in their GST work and noted several issues such as a lack of awareness, poor record maintenance, and urgency in meeting return deadlines. This paper describes these challenges and suggests ways to simplify GST compliance based on situations observed during my internship.
