Abstract
The speed at which Lagos, Nigeria, is rapidly urbanizing necessitates the provision of an efficient and sustainable transportation system that minimizes environmental impact and enhances mobility. This research tackled the role of smart infrastructure in encouraging green transport and sustainable urban development in Lagos. The researchers utilized a quantitative research design and managed a structured questionnaire among 400 professionals from urban planning, transport, and environmental management. The responses were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics by SPSS version 27. There were 312 valid responses. The findings reveal that the smart infrastructure elements- environmental monitoring sensors, smart EV parking, intelligent public transport, and dynamic traffic management account for 65.9% of the variance in sustainable urban planning. According to the study results, intelligent public transport (β = 0.312, p < 0.001) exerted the strongest impact on the acceptance of intelligent transport systems (ITS), followed by dynamic traffic management (β = 0.257), environmental monitoring sensor (β = 0.221), smart EV parking (β = 0.176). The results revealed that smart infrastructure boosts the efficiency of mobility, while lowering carbon footprints and enabling eco-friendly urban development. According to the study, the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and the Sustainable Development Theory are consistent with this evidence, which demonstrates that technology and supportive policies can achieve urban sustainability. The Lagos State Government should invest more in a Smart System Management, Strategic positioning of infrastructures, and Environmental Management Monitoring to enhance the successful transitioning Lagos State.
