Abstract

Maintaining sanitary food-contact surfaces is vital for public health, yet many commercial detergents rely on synthetic chemicals that may cause skin irritation and leave unwanted residues. This study explores guava (Psidium guajava) leaf extract as a natural, bio-based alternative to traditional agents in a dishwashing liquid formulation. Using the natural compounds found in guava leaves, this formulation provides a bio-based alternative for dishwashing that ensures both high cleaning performance and ensuring the product is non-irritating and safe for frequent skin contact. Specifically, this study evaluates the guava leaf extract–based dishwashing liquid in terms of its aroma, texture, and color, along with a detailed assessment of its odor and overall user preference.

Additionally, the formulation was analyzed based on its post-wash skin feel to ensure that the natural extract effectively prevents dryness while maintaining strong cleaning performance. Selected respondents and experts were engaged to evaluate the product’s physical attributes and performance. A developmental research design was employed in the formulation of the dishwashing liquid. Fresh guava leaves were collected, processed, and extracted using ethanol. The extract was combined with selected ingredients to produce the dishwashing liquid. Several formulations were prepared and subjected to sensory evaluation. Selected users served as respondents in assessing the product’s aroma, texture, and color, while experts evaluated the formulation based on post-wash skin feel, odor quality, and overall preference. Data were gathered using structured questionnaires and evaluation forms and were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as weighted mean and rank.

The results revealed that users generally strongly agreed on the description of the product’s aroma, texture, and color, indicating that the dishwashing liquid was pleasant, smooth, and visually appealing. Expert evaluators also provided positive assessments, particularly in terms of post-wash skin feel, confirming that the formulation was gentle and non-irritating. The product odor assessment and overall preference likewise received favorable ratings, suggesting that the product is suitable for daily household use.

However, experts recommended further improvements in fragrance and color intensity to enhance market appeal. The study confirms that guava leaf extract is effective in producing a safe and user-acceptable dishwashing liquid, and future research should focus on improving its fragrance, color, stability, and market potential.
