Online Learning Anxiety and Coping Mechanism of State University Freshmen Students During COVID-19 Pandemic in Southern Philippines: A Mixed Method Study

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the online learning anxiety and coping mechanism of the respondents during COVID-19 pandemic. This study used quantitative and qualitative research design, it involved 370 students who responded via online survey questionnaire, while eight (8) student participants were the key informants to shed the light on their online learning anxiety and coping mechanism during the new normal education. Finding showed that internet connectivity has the intervening factor in the submission of their class work of the respondents. Likewise, the respondents experienced the power interruption during online classes which disrupted their learning activities. Thus, teachers and students, chose the educational friendly platform which was Google Classroom that brought benefits of paperless, sharing assessments, and digital collaboration to virtual classroom. Moreover, the respondents experienced the difficulty in terms of financial capability of their parents to support their online learning. The study found out that the coping mechanism of the respondents during COVID-19 pandemic brought about the changes in the new normal education, resulted to adapting and coping strategies that are practical and applicable during online classes that can decrease the risk of psychological distress and preserve health and well- being of the students. Finally, the study showed that the respondents can adjust and adapt their online learning to cope to the normal education. Hence, students continually strive to survive and demonstrate positive actions, responses, and outlook to surpass and overcome the everyday struggles associated with remote learning. Thus, action is the antidote to despair, coping strategies is also the antidote to stress and challenges.
