Abstract
The evolution of sustainable fashion in India between 2018 and 2023 reflects a profound transformation in the way the fashion industry aligns with environmental responsibility, regulatory compliance, and consumer demand. This research paper, based entirely on secondary data, traces the shift from sustainability as a niche trend confined to luxury fashion to a mainstream priority for mass-market brands and export-driven manufacturers alike. Driven by international regulatory pressures, domestic policy interventions, technological innovations, and a growing consumer awareness of environmental issues, sustainability practices have gradually become embedded in the fabric of Indian fashion. This paper examines the regulatory milestones, corporate sustainability strategies, case studies of leading Indian brands, technological innovations such as digital traceability and circular economy models, and the evolving eco-consciousness of Indian consumers. It also offers forward-looking suggestions to deepen sustainability adoption, improve transparency, and make sustainable fashion affordable and accessible across rural and semi-urban India.
