Crops That Care: Genetic Modification for Environmental Sustainability

Abstract
Genetically modified agriculture is becoming increasingly vital for feeding the world’s population, as indicated by the significant rise in GM plant production area. The growth of genetically modified (GM) crops on millions of hectares of land and their introduction into our food chain is a massive global genetic experiment affecting all living things. Various genetic modification methods are used for the production of the desired food product. Potential advantages include increased crop output from lower inputs (energy, labour, and other costs); reduced use of chemical pesticides; crops with improved nutrition features; crops that can grow in inhospitable environments; and crops with improved handling and processing characteristics. While genetically modified foods (GMFs) have major potential benefits, their broad adoption has sparked much public and scientific debate. Concerns usually mentioned include potential dangers to human health, environmental consequences, and socioeconomic consequences. Regulatory agencies around the world have developed frameworks for comprehensive safety assessments of GMFs, but techniques and labelling requirements differ. The ongoing debate continues to affect the future development, commercialization, and consumer acceptability of genetically modified foods in response to global food challenges. This article encompasses few examples of genetically modified foods and their role.
