A Comprehensive Review of Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems: Principle, Types, Instrumentation and Applications

Momrez Ali1, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Naik2*

Abstract

Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems (TDDS) are dosage forms through which drugs are delivered in a controlled rate penetrating through the skin and entering the systemic circulation. It offers an alternative route to the conventional oral and parenteral routes of drug administration. Transdermal patch can facilitate continuous or prolonged drug administration thus increasing patients’ compliance to therapy. It can also deliver drugs to avoid interaction with the gastrointestinal tract and hepatic first-pass metabolism for appropriately selected drugs. However, skin presents formidable barrier to drug permeation and only a few drugs can penetrate through the stratum corneum. Various modern strategies including permeation enhancers, microneedles, iontophoresis and nanotechnology are employed to improve drug permeation across the skin barrier.
