Maria Riza B. Monton1*, Fe M. Dela Cruz, PhD2

Abstract

This study developed and investigated the effectiveness of play-based instructional materials in improving the fine motor, self-help, and cognitive skills of 27 kindergarten learners of Antongalon Elementary School. It utilized a descriptive developmental evaluation research design approach in designing play-based design materials aligned with the developmental needs of kindergarten learners. The developed materials were validated by five experts from the Department of Education (DepEd) Butuan City Division, using the standard validation and evaluation tool, the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Checklist. Results of the validation indicated that the play-based instructional materials were valid, appropriate and reliable for use with kindergarten learners. Based on the scores given by the experts, the mentioned play-based materials were valid and reliable. The pretest results showed that the majority of the learners manifested delays in their development in terms of fine motor, self-help, and cognitive skills. After the implementation of the play-based instructional materials, the posttest results revealed that most learners progressed to an average level of development, while some were classified as having slightly advanced and highly advanced levels.  Furthermore, paired t-test results revealed a statistically significant improvement in the learners’ fine motor, self-help, and cognitive skills after exposure to the play-based instructional materials. This study provides empirical evidence that play-based learning materials are an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing the analytic development of kindergarten learners.
