Abstract
Herbal creams are semisolid topical preparations in which one or more plant-derived materials or their standardized extracts are incorporated into a suitable cream base. They have attracted considerable interest because botanical constituents may provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, soothing, moisturizing, or wound-supporting effects. At the same time, the term “herbal” does not automatically mean that a product is safe, effective, or chemically consistent. The quality of a herbal cream depends on the identity and quality of the plant material, extraction method, concentration of selected constituents, choice of excipients, manufacturing conditions, packaging, storage, and appropriate evaluation. This article reviews the concept and classification of herbal creams, commonly used botanical ingredients, advantages and disadvantages, basic formulation principles, preparation approaches, and important evaluation tests. Special attention is given to organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity, spreadability, extrudability, Washability, homogeneity, stability, and microbial quality. A scientifically designed herbal cream should combine traditional knowledge with pharmaceutical formulation principles, quality control, safety assessment, and evidence-based evaluation. International guidance emphasizes that quality assurance should extend from sourcing and processing of herbal materials through manufacture and testing of finished products. Thus, well-standardized herbal creams can be useful topical dosage forms, but their therapeutic claims should be supported by appropriate scientific and quality data.
