Abstract

Sustainable infrastructure development has emerged as a critical focus in contemporary engineering and urban planning, especially in the context of rising environmental challenges, rapid urbanization, and increasing demand for resilient and eco-efficient construction. This research investigates the integration of advanced materials and innovative construction techniques as viable solutions to the global call for sustainable infrastructure. The study explores the role of geopolymer concrete, fiber-reinforced composites, high-performance insulation materials, Building Information Modeling (BIM), 3D printing, and modular construction systems in reducing the environmental footprint of infrastructure projects while improving cost-efficiency, durability, and energy performance. A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative literature analysis and expert-based insights was employed to assess global trends and applicability in developing contexts, particularly Nigeria. Results indicate that countries with proactive adoption of advanced materials and digital construction strategies report lower lifecycle costs, shorter project timelines, and enhanced environmental performance. In contrast, emerging economies face challenges such as limited technical capacity, high initial costs, lack of awareness, and weak regulatory frameworks. The study concludes that although Nigeria and similar regions are lagging in implementation, there is significant potential for transformation through policy reforms, investment in local material innovation, public-private partnerships, and targeted capacity-building initiatives. Recommendations emphasize the need for national sustainability frameworks, incentives for green practices, and investment in education and research on sustainable construction technologies.
