Impact of Participation on Extra-Curricular Activities on Personality Enhancement of Special Needs Students of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study focused on the Impact of Participation on extra-curricular activities on personality enhancement of special needs students of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was used. The population of the study was special needs students. The sample size of the study was Ninety (90) respondents selected through a purposive sampling technique. Two research questions were raised to guide the conduct of the study. The research instruments used to obtain data was self-developed by the researchers, titled, “Questionnaire on impact of participation on Extra-curricular activities on enhancement of special needs students”, fashioned on four likert rating scale of four; Strongly Agreed (SA), Agreed (A), Disagreed (D) and Strongly Disagreed (SD) rated on 4; 3; 2 and 1 respectively. The research instruments were validated by two experts in Test and measurement, while its reliability was obtained through test-retest method at two weeks interval and 0.72 coefficient reliability was obtained. Data obtained on the research questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics (simple percentage, frequency counts and mean x ̅). Based on the results of the study, conclusions were made that participation in extra-curricular activities by the special needs students could improve their self-esteem and social skills (communication patterns, styles and skills). Recommendation were therefore made that the special needs students should always be encouraging by the schools’ activities by giving them opportunities to be participating in extra-curricular activities. Also, they should be enlightened on the need for them to be participating in extra-curricular activities, and so on.
