Towards Digital Urban Cartography: GIS-Driven Web Mapping of Gwale Local Government Area

Abstract
Rapid urbanization and population growth in Nigeria have created an urgent need for reliable spatial data systems to support efficient planning and infrastructure management. Traditional paper maps and static digital maps often lack the interactivity and accessibility required for effective spatial decision-making. This study developed a GIS-driven web mapping system for Gwale Local Government Area (LGA), Kano State, aimed at enhancing urban cartography through dynamic visualization and data sharing. Primary spatial data were collected using GPS and field observations, while secondary data were obtained from administrative shapefiles, existing maps, and satellite imagery. ArcGIS and QGIS were used for spatial processing, and Leaflet.js was applied for interactive web visualization. The resulting web-based platform allows users to visualize, query, and analyze multiple spatial layers, including roads, schools, health centers, and administrative boundaries. Findings revealed that the system improves data accessibility, supports real-time visualization, and facilitates more efficient spatial decision-making. The study concludes that integrating GIS with web technologies offers a viable solution for promoting data-driven governance, spatial transparency, and sustainable urban management in developing regions.
