Smart City Planning through Digital Twins: Enhancing Urban Resilience and Sustainability
Francis Pol Costoy Lim1,2*
Abstract
Rapid population growth, climate change, aged infrastructure, and resource shortages have pushed urban centers around the world to their limits. Digital twins are dynamic virtual replicas of physical spaces enabled by real-time data and analytics. This article assesses how digital twins can improve urban resilience and sustainability through real-time monitoring, predictive modeling, scenario simulation, and evidence-based decision-making in smart city planning. The key conceptual underpinnings, key enabling technologies, domains of application, and contemporary challenges are reviewed. By examining these elements in depth, this study shows that urban digital twins hold immense promise for improving infrastructure management, optimizing energy use, monitoring the environment, and engaging citizens in democratic governance. Successful implementation requires careful attention to data integration, governance, stakeholder engagement, and issues of equitable access.
