Urban Drainage Hazards and Monsoon-Related Accidents in Chittagong City: Causes, Impacts, and Preventive Strategies

Abstract

Chittagong City experiences recurrent urban drainage-related hazards during the monsoon season. Open drains, canals, and uncovered ditches pose significant safety risks to residents, especially children. Accidental falls into these water channels often lead to injuries, infections, or fatalities. This article investigates the causes of such accidents using statistical and mathematical analysis, evaluates their social and economic impacts, and proposes practical preventive measures. Findings indicate that poor urban planning, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient public awareness are major contributors. Proper covering of drains, maintenance, warning systems, and community awareness programs can reduce risks and improve public safety (Alam & Rabbani, 2007; Ahmed & Hossain, 2015; Haque & Zaman, 2012).
