Microbubble Drug Delivery System: A Review

Abstract

Microbubble drug delivery systems have emerged as an innovative platform for targeted, image-guided, and non-invasive drug administration. These micron-sized gas-filled bubbles, encapsulated by lipid, protein, or polymer shells, can circulate safely in the bloodstream and be ruptured or oscillated using ultrasound to release drugs at specific sites. This review summarizes the fundamental principles, composition, mechanisms of ultrasound-mediated delivery, formulation strategies, and clinical applications of microbubble-assisted drug delivery systems. Advances in ultrasound parameters and shell materials have significantly improved microbubble stability and targeting efficiency. The potential use of microbubbles in tumor therapy, thrombolysis, and gene delivery offers promising future directions for personalized medicine.
