Management Concepts and Applications from Upanishads

Ms. K. Bhavani Tripur1*

Abstract

The Upanishads are ancient philosophical texts which have originated in our great country Bharath. These Upanishads provide profound insights to various concepts like, the nature of existence, the origin of Universe, about Self, (Atman) etc., Upanishads are the concluding portions of Vedas, and they contain the essence of Vedas – the sacred scriptures. These sacred scriptures are considered to be the direct and immediate Spiritual experiences of Rishis, the seers of truth and they have been passed from one generation to the other, through succession of illumined Gurus(teachers) orally. Hence, the great concepts of divinity of soul, oneness of humanity and the indivisibility of God are discussed in these scriptures not just as articles of faith but as facts of Spiritual experiences. Schopenhauer once said: “The Upanishads are the most rewarding and elevating reading possible in the world, they have been the solace of my life and will be that of my death.” While Upanishads primarily focus on Spiritual Knowledge and self – realisation, many concepts discussed in these sacred texts are remarkably relevant to the theories and practices of contemporary management. This paper explores the concepts of management that are embedded in Upanishads and their practical application in the modern organisations. By trying to analyse the core principles of Upanishads, like – self- awareness, leadership, decision making, ethics and sustainability, the aper highlights on the timeless relevance of these teachings as a source of guidance for effective management and successful organisations in the modern technological era.
