A Network Approach to Cultural Organization and Professional Management in Small Family Businesses

Dr. Atul Kumar1*, Dr. Pardeep Kumar2

Abstract
This paper discusses how a small business experiences professional management by examining the relationship between organisational networking and cultural organising in the workplace. A network perspective is presented to evaluate the ways in which workplace relations contribute to cultural organising. A social constructionist view of organisational networking is proposed, which emphasises how individuals assign meaning to their interactions with co-workers. A workplace ethnography is explored, focusing on the recruitment of a “professional” manager and his efforts to introduce new work practices in a family-run firm. The analysis reveals that members of the organisation shape cultural organising through emotional framing, producing mutuality and belonging. In re-enacting workplace relationships, individuals often resist change and attempt to maintain cultural continuity. The paper concludes with implications for small business research, managerial practice, and organisational training.
