Landscape Management Practices for Sustaining Water Resources with SpecialReference to Rivers and Lakes

Abstract
This research aims to study the sustainable management practices for freshwater resources in Lakes and Rivers. The study is focused on the management practices of rivers and lakes. Practices adopted in India are studied for better understanding. The management practices adopted abroad are studied by reviewing the literature available on it as field visits weren’t possible due to the limitation of time and resources. Chilika
is one of the hotspots of biodiversity in India with a unique ecological status having both freshwater and saltwater characteristics creating an extremely productive environment due to an efficient nutrient cycle. The lagoon, in view of its biodiversity, has turned out to be an excellent center for research and tourist attraction. In the case of Amazon, a detailed survey has been carried out catering to different issues before reaching any conclusion. The management practices carried out have been formulated taking into consideration the requirements and needs of the people of various countries. The management practices adopted can also be classified into macro and micro levels. Whatever management practices are adopted and whatever policies are formulated, ecology is kept as a prime focus. As the richest biodiversity is found in this interface, this zone is given importance. The surrounding land use aspect is also vital in formulating management practices.
